Plasticisers

The Problem With Plasticisers

Phthalate-based plasticisers may be added to plastics to make them softer and more malleable. Unfortunately, plasticisers can leach into foodstuffs and may be endocrine disruptors. Spirit drinks are unlikely to contain these materials although it is possible to find them when, for example, the spirit has been in contact with plastic piping. China had limits in place which were relaxed in 2016, but some areas may enforce limits.

Accredited Testing

T&T are accredited for the analysis of Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), Diisononyl phthalate (DINP) and Bis(2-ehylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). These are the plasticisers most commonly looked for in spirit drinks.
